Camarillo Retaining Walls

Retaining wall in simple words may be defined as a wall that retains or holds the soil behind it. It can be made by pouring concrete or by using other masonry materials like rocks, bricks, concrete blocks and timber depending upon the need and necessity. Why Do You Need a Retaining Wall?

The main purpose of building a retaining wall is restraining the soil to unnatural slopes. They are constructed at places of terrain that have undesirable and very uneven slopes, where stopping soil erosion is very hard, where roadway overpasses and hillside farming are planned. It is built to check the lateral pressure the soil creates due to change in the ground elevation.

Types of Retaining Walls

There are four types of retaining walls, namely gravity retaining walls, piling retaining walls, anchored retaining walls, and finally cantilever retaining walls.

Gravity Retaining Walls

These are the oldest forms of retaining walls and are thicker than other types. Usually built of concrete bricks or blocks and mortar in between to hold them, they are structurally massive enough to withstand heavy lateral forces. Steel not used to build these generally. However, they are considered to be good and economical enough, only up to a height of 10 feet.

Cantilever Walls

These types of walls are known for their ability to bend and rotate. In other words, they are not as rigid as gravity walls. These walls depend on the flexibility factor. The distribution of the earth’s lateral pressure on this type of wall depends upon the quotient of deformation as well as stiffness of soil and wall. Reinforced concrete is used to build them, and they are considered viable up to a height of 10 meters.

Piling Walls

These are temporary walls made of plastic, sheet, and processed timber. They are made to withstand only a few months or a season. They are not durable, yet they solve the purpose for the time being. This is the only type which can be used underwater table.

Anchored Retaining Walls

These walls are anchored from top to bottom with cables and other means to a rock or other stable substance. Material is induced with anchors, and then with the pressurized help concrete or by other mechanical means, it is expanded at cable ends. The expanded concrete thus forms a bulb inside the soil.
