Camarillo Stone Masonry

Natural stones and mortar are used for masonry construction for building foundations for retaining walls, floors, columns, and arches. Natural stones are extremely durable. They are cut and dressed in proper shape and size. Commonly used stones are granite, limestone, marble, sandstone, and laterite. Besides being tough, they should be free from sand holes, cracks, and cavities.

Since the hardness of the stones varies, their availability and the importance of the structure are taken into consideration before installing them. Cement, sand, and water, when mixed well together becomes mortar. The strength of the stone masonry largely depends upon the proportion of cement. We, at Camarillo Concrete & Masonry, pay first priority to this.

Classification of Stone Masonry

Masonry is broad of two types:

Rubble Masonry uses undressed or roughly dressed stones. As a result, the masonry constructions lack uniformity in thickness. The strength of this masonry depends on the following

  • Quality of the mortar that again is dependent upon the quality and proportion of cement used in the mortar.
  • Laying of long through stones
  • Leaving no joints or spaces unfilled with mortar.

Rubble Masonry is further classified as:

  • Coursed Rubble Masonry: Stones having a definite course are put in the same heights. All the courses are of different sizes. It is suitable for residential and public buildings and piers of ordinary bridges.
  • Unsourced Rubble Masonry uses stones of different sizes (undresses) and is the cheapest. In the further category random uncoursed rubble masonry, the edges and corners of the stones are removed, and bigger stones are put at the quoins and jambs for increasing the strength. In the square category, the stones are roughly finished by hammer
  • Dry Rubble Masonry is made without using a mortar and filling small spaces with smaller pieces of stones. It is used in canal slopes and earthen dams
  • Polygonal Masonry uses stones that are shaped into irregular polygon shapes. No vertical joints are required. Stone chips are used to support the stones
  • Flint Rubble Masonry: Flints are nodules of silica that are available in an irregular shape. They are hard but brittle. They come in lengths between 15 to 30 cm, and thickness varies between 8 to15cm.

Ashlar Masonry

This type of Masonry uses exactly sized stones that have fine and uniform joints. With a thickness of about 3mm, the stones are arranged in different patterns.

Other types of Ashlar Masonry are as below:

  • Ashlar Fine Masonry
  • Ashlar Block in Course
  • Ashlar Chamfered Masonry
  • Ashlar Rough Tooled Masonry
  • Rock or Quarry Faced Masonry
